Summer Wars

A 2.5D platformer developed in 2.5 months, inspired by the famous Japanese animated film Summer Wars. This project reimagines the movie’s universe through interactive gameplay, combining platforming mechanics with a stylized visual approach.

THE STORY

The goal of this project was to create a 2.5D platformer based on a Japanese animated film, while staying as faithful as possible to its original art direction. We aimed to deliver a game that is both visually appealing and enjoyable to play in terms of gameplay.
We worked as a small team of around ten people during our second-year first-semester project.

OUR APPROACH

I developed a fully modular cel-shading system, along with a custom “fake” lighting setup designed to be highly controllable to match the project’s artistic direction. I also implemented a 3D outline system for all objects, as well as various cartoon-style visual effects.
The main goal was to achieve a visual style as close as possible to the original film’s art direction. The day/night cycle is driven by an emissive-based system to maintain visual consistency across lighting changes.
